Yorkshire, Humber & North East

The largest contributor of GDP in the North

The areas of Yorkshire, the Tees Valley and the North East cover a huge and incredibly diverse economy. The major city regions such as Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Newcastle, and Hull have been through significant regeneration over recent years and are building future economies on the foundations of the past.

There is a polycentric balance to the regions that sees the Yorkshire strengths of healthcare innovation and analytics, advanced manufacturing, financial and professional services complementing strengths further North East of automotive manufacturing and energy/renewables.

It is a region that is young and getting younger. Bradford is the youngest city in the UK and as a whole the region is creating a talent pool that is digitally-literate and entrepreneurially-minded. Assets such as the NHS Spine in Leeds, the financial services cluster around Bradford, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Sheffield and Nissan in Sunderland have built around them centres of excellence of data analytics, fintech, advanced and automotive manufacturing respectively.

There is a strong infrastructure with thirteen universities across Yorkshire, the North East and Tees Valley. Leeds Bradford International Airport is the fastest growing in the UK and sits alongside four other significant airports and the ports on the North East coastline creating essential international gateways. The North East is the most active exporting region in the country.

The future looks stronger still. Leeds will be a hub for HS2, not only acting as a catalyst for huge regeneration around the site but also opening up further investment for the region given a journey time of one hour to London. Hull’s appointment as Capital of Culture has given confidence to the city and acted as a regenerative spark.
We believe in this huge economy of diverse strengths. Growth is in the DNA. This is where Marks and Spencer built an empire from a market stall in Leeds and where household brands such as Fairy, Domestos and Lucozade were created by the region’s innovators.
We are invested in this region and will continue to do so.
